Abby Couriers create three more apprenticeship posts

Three young people from the Thames Gateway Corridor have the opportunity to gain new qualifications in logistics management thanks to Basildon-based Abby Couriers.

Managing Director of Abby Couriers, Mark Giles, said: "Earlier in 2009 we tried the apprenticeship scheme to see if it would work for our company and we have been extremely pleased with Jody Bronze who joined the team and is completing an apprenticeship in our accounts and administration department.

"That success has encouraged us to create three more apprenticeship posts as part of our continuing expansion programme.

"During the last three months of 2009 we have won new contracts in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Kent and Wiltshire as well as expanded our operations in Greater London with the addition of three electric powered vehicles to our fleet.

"Those contracts mean we need more staff at our Basildon Head Office and we have decided to create three posts for apprentices wishing to gain qualifications in logistics management.

"The three successful candidates will be managed by Abby Couriers Director Ruth Giles who will be responsible for their ‘on-the-job’ training with other training provided via the Logistics Sector Skills Council based in Milton Keynes and the new South Essex College which opens in Basildon in January 2010 and has a centre of excellence for logistics within its business department.

"The career prospects within the logistics industry are excellent especially here in the Thames Gateway corridor – with London Southend Airport in the east and the Port of Tilbury in the west logistics is big business along the A127 Enterprise Corridor and the A13.

"Elsewhere in the county there are considerable opportunities in the Haven Gateway area based on Harwich and of course at London Stansted Airport.

"Anyone interested in more details of the apprenticeships we are offering should email james@abbycouriers.com for more details."
