Briggs Equipment provide five counterbalance forklift trucks for Pork Farms

A single minded focus on efficiency and cost savings has secured Briggs Equipment a major contract renewal with the UK’s leading sausage roll producer, reducing costs by up to £18,000.

Multi award winner, Pork Farms, manufactures and distributes its signature sausage rolls, pork pies and various other pork foods across the UK. When the company’s Market Drayton site changed manufacturing processes, it needed a materials handling partner that could keep pace with lean manufacturing operations and drive out inefficiencies.

Dave Bradley, supply chain manager at Pork Farms comments: "We went to tender with a number of materials handling suppliers but Briggs’ innovative approach to problem solving means that we now have fewer trucks covering the same work even more productively than before."

Briggs undertook a thorough site survey to match truck capacity with operations to maximise machine utilisation. The old battery powered trucks were replaced with gas powered ones to ensure immediate truck availability for time-critical operations.

"We are driven by the sell-by dates of the final food product," continues Dave Bradley. "If the trucks are not running and reliable, our operation will fail. The gas powered trucks are available and ready to work whenever we need them and this has really helped our operation."

The achilles heel of the process was a rotator truck used to remove the waste from site. By replacing the rotator attachment and standardising its use across three counterbalance machines, uptime has dramatically increased. In addition, Briggs reduced the fleet size by two counterbalance machines.

Dan Carley, sales executive for Briggs Equipment comments: "After listening carefully to Pork Farms’ needs, we were able to reduce the fleet to seven machines and save them at least £18,000 over the contract."

The new fleet consists of five counterbalance trucks and two reach trucks as well as an additional two power pallet trucks. Pork Farms operates out of four UK sites including, Market Drayton, Shaftsbury, Queensdrive and Riverside. Briggs runs a total fleet of 24 long-term rental machines.
