In the UK, the affordability of tram schemes remains an issue. Can the new generation of trolleybuses, such as those in Rome, deliver cost-effective rapid transit for Leeds? West Yorkshire PTE (Metro) and Leeds City Council believe the answer is ‘yes’ and are jointly pursuing a £276m trolleybus system which will be unique in the UK. Trolleybuses have the potential to meet the NGT scheme objectives but cost substantially less than the cancelled Leeds Supertram scheme. The presentation will explain the current status of the NGT proposals, why trolleybuses are the preferred mode and consider some of the key challenges ahead.
