Freight Transport Association welcomes the appointment of new Transport Secretary Philip Hammond

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has congratulated Philip Hammond on becoming the new Transport Secretary in the first coalition government for generations. The leading trade body has welcomed the appointment of an MP with first-hand business experience and a focus on economic stability and hopes that these skills are brought to bear to the benefit of the logistics sector and the many businesses that rely on it.

Theo de Pencier, Chief Executive of FTA, said:

"We would like to congratulate Mr Hammond on his appointment as Transport Secretary, and we look forward to working with him on those pressing challenges facing the industry right now, from investment in infrastructure to finding workable carbon solutions and creating more capacity across all modes of transport."

The logistics sector employs eight per cent of the UK’s workforce and contributes around £100 billion each year to the UK economy.

de Pencier concluded:
"Transport is inextricably linked to the economy’s well being and it has an undeniable influence on business and, indeed, our daily lives. In the coming term we hope to impress on Mr Hammond why the logistics sector deserves an unswerving political commitment to ensure its future success; and we will be discussing with him ways we can better reap all the benefits that the sector brings."
