O’Reilly Transport has agreed a major contract with leading GPS tracking and vehicle telematics company VeriLocation.
It’s a major investment for the haulage company, which will be dedicating a full-time member of staff to make the most of the VL-CANbus information.
Managing Director Eugene O’Reilly said: "Our trials of the VL-CANbus showed the potential of significant savings on the operation of each vehicle.
"We found that VL-CANbus gave us valuable information on how factors like driver performance and routing affect the costs of running a vehicle.
I am very confident this system will pay for itself in the first year and save money for years to come."
Andrew Overton from VeriLocation added: "The VL-CANbus can provide a virtually unlimited flow of information to the fleet manager. This allows them to be constantly tweaking the ways they run their fleet.
"For example they can demonstrate to drivers how harsh acceleration and braking reduces fuel efficiency and wears parts more quickly.
"Lots of small changes soon add up to more efficient operations that cost significantly less."
The VL-CANbus technology will be used by O’Reilly to monitor a number of key performance indicators for each vehicle in real time.
It can even raise the alarm if it thinks fuel is being siphoned from a parked vehicle.
Trials with VeriLocation’s customers have typically found they achieve a reduction in operation costs of between 2 and 10 per cent, with a return on investment achieved within 6 to 12 months.
VeriLocation has been in GPS tracking and mapping since 1995, and now tracks more than 10,000 devices and vehicles in the UK.
O’Reilly Transport was set up in 1972 and now has a staff of 200 working from purpose-built premises in Dublin Port.
The company has offices in Dublin, Ashbourne, Warrenpoint, Belfast, Heysham & Bradford.
