The harness system is the result of a project led by Ross Thomson, aftermarket development manager for Carrier Transicold, and involved feedback from engineers and the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and detailed testing of numerous prototypes in order to deliver a practical, field-based solution that would limit the engineer’s risk of a fall from a truck cab roof when working on overcab refrigeration units.
The bespoke system works by safely securing the engineer to the factory-fitted lifting points on Carrier Transicold refrigeration units and incorporates a rapidly adjustable reach and restraint mechanism, which maximises accessibility to the unit and side control box for service and repair work.
"Whilst working from cab roofs in the field has been an accepted method in the industry for many years and we have an unblemished safety record in this area, we also have a goal as the U.K.’s largest provider of transport refrigeration repair services to continually challenge and raise the standards and safety levels for field engineers wherever we can," explains Scott Dargan, operations director, Carrier Transicold U.K.
After finding no comparable product on the market, Carrier Transicold made the decision to develop its own harness to suit the unique nature of its requirements. Dargan adds, "This harness improves the working environment for engineers and also means field-based fixes can be maximised, which is good news for our customers and therefore a win-win for everybody."
