999 miles – Wincanton takes on Land’s End to John O’Groats challenge

Wincanton is undertaking the Wincanton Big Event 2016, which will see employees cycle 999 miles and 57,000 feet of climbing between Land’s End and John O’Groats to raise money for the British Heart Foundation and Transaid.

The mammoth charity cycle will take place between 18th and 29th April, visiting a number of Wincanton’s logistics sites throughout the UK.

Adrian Colman, CEO of Wincanton, commented: “We wanted to do something really special to mark Wincanton’s 90th year, and what could be more special than taking on the legendary Land’s End to John O’Groats challenge? It’s a great opportunity for Wincanton colleagues all over the country to get involved, in whatever way, in a ‘heart healthy’ event which actively supports the wellbeing of our colleagues.

“We’re delighted that over one hundred colleagues have been eager to sign up for the challenge. The fundraising has started in earnest – although there’s a long way to go. It’s about fitness, it’s about fun, and it’s about raising money for two great charities.”

Wincanton is aiming to raise £30,000 for the two chosen charities. The business has been supported by its customers and suppliers, Halfords, Renault, Argos, Adidas, PFS, Homebase, Screwfix and Arnold Clark, who donated spares, equipment, supplies, transport and fundraising raffle prizes as well as their time and energy.

British Heart Foundation needs no introduction: the UK’s national heart charity, it is now 55 years old and currently supports 1,000 research projects: it is aiming to cut deaths by premature cardio-vascular disease by 25% by 2025.

Transaid aims to improve access to basic services and economic opportunity for poor people in developing countries through transport-based solutions, including bikes and training for community health workers and training drivers for both emergency and commercial uses.

Wincanton, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary, operates and manages the supply chain for some of the UK’s largest businesses, across numerous sectors including retail, construction, defence, energy and manufacturing.
