Airlines forced to make savage cuts to survive

Further airlines expected to go to the wall whilst IT expenditure expected to rise

The airline industry is bracing itself for another set of dire profits when the sector reports its half year results in the coming weeks. The industry's seven biggest carriers reported operating losses of 5.2 per cent in the first quarter of this year, down 7.7 per cent on the same period last year and the projections are that worse is to come.

Most of the world's largest carriers are finding that the rising cost of fuel is crippling business, many experts predict that more airlines are in danger of collapse due to the impact of the sharp increase in the cost of a barrel of oil and the economic slowdown. According to the industry trade body IATA, US airlines alone will spend nearly $60bn combined on fuel this year, $20bn more than the 2007 bill.

More and more airlines are being driven to streamline their operations and create greater efficiencies through the use of innovative IT and outsourcing solutions and programmes .
