Cardiff businessman Andrew Nicholson was not going to let South Wales’ recent heavy snowfalls prevent him from attending the launch by local dealer Euro Commercials of a brand new Mercedes-Benz van model.
And his determination to beat the blizzard conditions paid off for Andrew, when he won the use of a fuel-efficient Citan 109 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY for six months.
The new van could not be coming at a better time either. Andrew, the Managing Director of telephone systems supplier TWL Voice & Data, explains: "We’ve just been awarded a six-month contract, so I’ll assign the Citan to the engineer who’s going to be servicing that business."
The Citan marks the entry of Mercedes-Benz into the small van market. Packed with clever features, its is powered by a fuel-efficient diesel engine which is offered with 75 hp, 90 hp and 110 hp power outputs, or a 114 hp petrol unit.
Panel van versions are available in three lengths – Compact, Long and Extra-long. The Citan Traveliner is based on the Long wheelbase and has a folding rear bench seat, allowing it to carry the driver and up to four passengers. The Citan Dualiner, meanwhile, has the same seating configuration but, because it is based on the Extra-long format, also offers a practical cargo space.
Guests who made it to the Copthorne Hotel in Cardiff heard Mercedes-Benz UK Van Sales & Marketing Director Steve Bridge, and Euro Commercials Dealer Principal Chris Anthony introduce the new model.
Andrew won the use of the van in a ‘heads and tails’ competition, which saw Chris tossing a coin and those taking part guessing which way it would fall. There were just three people left in the game when Andrew put his hands on his head, and the other two chose tails by putting their hands on their behinds.
"I was amazed to hear Chris call ‘heads’," recalls Andrew. "I always enter competitions at business events but have never won anything before. In fact, when it gets down to the wire I usually choose ‘tails for Wales’; I’ve no idea why I went for heads this time, but I’m very glad I did."
TWL Voice & Data recently took delivery from Euro Commercials of five Long-bodied Mercedes-Benz Vito vans, replacements for a previous batch supplied by the same dealer.
"The Vito is superbly reliable and well equipped, while we also appreciate the fact that unlike other van dealers Euro Commercials are able to service our vehicles overnight, so they’re always available for work when we need them," continued Andrew.
"The Citan has an equally impressive specification, with all of the active and passive safety features we’ve come to expect from Mercedes-Benz, and is clearly very fuel-efficient. It wouldn’t be big enough for all of our engineers, some of whom have to carry quite a lot of equipment and tools. But we have two or three for whom it would be the perfect size."
The Mercedes-Benz Citan has a volume carrying capacity of up to 3.8 m³ and a maximum payload potential of 735 kg. It also leads the small van market in terms of fuel efficiency, achieving up to 65.7 mpg and producing CO2 emissions as low as 112 g/km.
Chris Anthony added: "The Citan is a very exciting addition to the Mercedes-Benz van range and we’re offering some highly competitive and flexible finance packages that can put customers behind the wheel for as little as £6.95 a day."
Euro Commercials will be staging a second Citan event for those existing and prospective customers who were unable to make the launch because of the adverse weather.
