Briggs wins prestigious award for commitment to apprentices

Briggs Equipment, a leading service and forklift supplier, has won a prestigious industry award for its commitment to developing the next generation of engineers.

The Cannock-based company was recognised at the UKWA Awards where it scooped top honours in the Training category.

Briggs impressed judges with its innovative four-year apprenticeship programme that includes hands-on practical work and classroom-based learning at college.

As part of the programme, apprentices benefit from learning the theory behind forklift truck engineering as well as working in the firm’s workshops and out in the field with experienced engineers.

Following the award at a special gala event at the Dorchester Hotel in London, Briggs Chief Executive Richard Close said: "We are very proud of our commitment to young people who’ve chosen engineering as a career and it’s fantastic to see our efforts recognised in this way.

"Every year we take on a number of young people once they have completed their training and it’s no exaggeration to say they are the future of the company, and the wider industry."

Organised by the UK Warehousing Association, the awards recognise excellence in a range of disciplines across the warehouse sector and Briggs – Britain’s sole national distributor of Yale Europe Materials Handling equipment – is no stranger to success in the high-profile competition.

An innovative driver training programme developed for one of its customers, Homebase, was also shortlisted in the training category this year whilst in 2010 it won a prestigious technology and innovation award for its acclaimed ‘Speedshield’ asset management tool.

Richard added: "Our success at these awards re-enforces our position as a driving force in the warehouse industry and our commitment to excellence in everything we do."
