CHEP pallet and container pooling sponsor Craig MacLean in London 2012

Leading international logistics services company CHEP, supplier of the famous ‘blue pallets’, is providing a sponsored and liveried VW Passat Estate to be used by Craig MacLean of the GB Paralympic Team in the run-up to the London 2012 games.

Craig – who comes from Grantown-on-Spey – enjoyed an illustrious career in track cycling alongside fellow Team GB star Chris Hoy, winning a Silver medal in the Team Sprint at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, before becoming the team’s lead man in 2002. His impressive medal collection includes Bronze, Silver and Gold in successive UCI Track World Championships, and Bronze and Gold in the Commonwealth Games of 2002 and 2006.

A back injury at the start of the 2007-2008 track season meant that he narrowly missed out on the squad for the World Championships and Olympic games, and in 2009, he was inducted into the British Cycling Hall of Fame.

Craig decided to withdraw from international competition for the mandatory two years required to be eligible to become a pilot for tandem racing. He plans to compete as the able-bodied pilot in tandem racing in the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. "I am delighted that CHEP is sponsoring me to help me achieve this goal. I chose the model of car because it allows me to transport the tandem and all the associated equipment to races and training sessions around the country."

CHEP’s Country General Manager Mike Pooley was himself in Scotland’s cycling team at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, and is delighted that CHEP is sponsoring a Scottish cycling legend.

"Cycling is an activity that complements our corporate values," he said. "We’re running a ‘Cycle to Work’ scheme for CHEP employees as part of our company sustainability policy and have introduced bike shelters and changing facilities at all our major UK sites. It’s good for the environment, good for the health and wellbeing of our colleagues, and saves money too! We are very proud to be sponsoring Craig and hope that his involvement will inspire our team to make healthy lifestyle choices."

CHEP is also sponsoring a team of young riders at the Revolution Cycle Series in Manchester, with four races in 2010 and 2011. Craig has appeared regularly at Revolution events, competing in the Sprint and Keirin events and plans to make racing appearances at future events as the captain of the CHEP team.
