Michael Callus, Vice President of Container Management at United Arab Shipping Company, Dubai, has been elected as the next Chairman of the Container Owners Association (COA).
The election took place at the meeting of the COA Board of Directors on Thursday 29 November 2012. Michael Callus takes over this position from Bernard Isoard of CMA-CGM, who had held the post since 2007.
"It is a great honour to take over this role, which carries with it a lot of responsibility" Michael Callus says. "I aim to continue on the good work produced over the years by my predecessor."
The COA Board comprises senior representatives from some of the world’s largest container shipping lines and leasing companies, including: Maersk Line, CMA-CGM, United Arab Shipping Company, STX Panocean, Seaco Global, Triton Container and Florens Container Services. An existing COA Board Member, Michael Callus is returning to the post of COA Chairman, having first undertaken this role in 2005 when the COA was established.
As Chairman of the COA from September 2007 to November 2012, Bernard Isoard oversaw considerable expansion in the COA, and the establishment of a number of significant industry projects by the COA. Initiatives during this period have included work on container flooring, paints, container depots, flexitanks and refrigerants, together with the establishment of CINS (the Cargo Incident Notification System).
"Bernard has left behind a strong legacy, having increased membership from 70 to 165 over five years, and established members meetings all over the world, including in Shanghai, Seoul, Amsterdam and Hamburg" says Michael Callus. "It is important that the COA continues to be at the forefront, representing the container owners on Technical, Operational and Environmental issues."
Outgoing chairman, Bernard Isoard adds "Michael Callus has been at the heart of the Container Owners Association since it was founded and has a strong relationship with the existing members. He is the perfect choice to lead the association in the difficult days we are all facing."
The Container Owners Association was founded in November 2004 as an international organisation representing the common interests of all owners of freight containers. It now has 165 members, including shipping lines, leasing companies and intermodal operators. For more information please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call +44 (0) 20 8390 0000.
