Design 4 Safety Award winners announced at IMHX 2010 materials handling event

Winners of the inaugural IMHX Design 4 Safety Awards were announced yesterday, in a ceremony on BITA’s stand at the premier IMHX materials handling event, taking place this week (16-19 November 2010) at the NEC Birmingham.

The Transdek Double Deck Lift was announced Specialist Winner in the Automation category.

The Toyota Material Handling BT Pro Lifter Hand Pallet Truck was announced Specialist Winner in the Industrial Trucks category.

The Sentry Protection Products Rack Sentry Cut-out was announced Specialist Winner in the Racking & Storage category.

The Cooper SH NearGuard Safety Alert System was announced Specialist Winner in the Technology category.
The Awards were presented by Peter Lennon, Head of the Workplace Transport team in the Health & Safety Executive’s Work Environment, Radiation & Gas Division. Speaking at the event, he commented: "The Health & Safety at Work Act and the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations are both clear about the need for safe articles and products for use at work.

"Good design for safety is an integral part of the health and safety system, because good health and safety are very important aspects of running a business. It is clear that designing innovatively for health and safety makes economic sense, because it helps businesses manage risks and so reduce the number of people being injured or suffering ill-health at work."

Visitors to IMHX are now being invited to vote for a Popular Winner drawn from the four Specialist Winners. This will be dubbed ‘The Professionals’ Choice’, and will be announced at IMHX on Friday 19 November.

About the Design 4 Safety Awards
The Design 4 Safety Awards were created by IMHX owners BITA (the British Industrial Truck Association) and Quartz Publishing & Exhibitions Ltd., to highlight the importance of safety product design features in helping to ensure safe materials handling operations.

James Clark, Secretary-General of BITA, said: "BITA is in the business of ‘lifting industry standards’, which includes working continually to improve standards of safety in all workplaces using industrial trucks. Initiatives such as our pocket-sized safety booklets, and now the Design 4 Safety Awards, aim to keep crucial operational safety issues in the spotlight throughout supply chain operations."

How the Awards were organised
Over 10% of IMHX exhibitors contributed entries to the Awards in four categories, to reflect the full spectrum of materials handling and logistics disciplines. Judging took place in two stages: first, a panel of independent industry specialists, drawn from the media, the HSE and various industry bodies, voted to elect three finalists in each category. Second, another panel, including health and safety practitioners from prominent UK companies and organisations, voted again to decide the winners.

Judges’ citations for the Specialist Winners
Transdek Double Deck Lift
Transdek’s Double Deck Lift deals thoroughly with the numerous hazards associated with the loading and unloading of double-deck trailers, which are being increasingly adopted by haulage operators to reduce costs and carbon emissions. Based on the judges’ real-world experience the Double Deck Lift reduces the likelihood of struck-by incidents involving lift trucks, and makes it safer to move loads at height.

This is an extremely well thought-out product that is easy to use, but also enforces safe process discipline through effective safety interlocks. It is a very good example of how innovative design enables safety to remain front of mind without restricting commercial imperatives.

Toyota Material Handling UK BT Pro Lifter Hand Pallet truck
The Toyota BT Pro Lifter significantly reduces the effort needed to get a load moving, which is a real benefit when unloading tightly packed goods trailers, and in the diverse modern workforce composed of individuals with widely varying abilities. Plus, by making it easier to manage heavy loads on a vehicle tail lift, the BT Pro Lifter also contributes to a reduction in working at height accidents.

Hand pallet trucks are not usually associated with the kind of dramatic safety incidents that sometimes occur with forklift trucks. However, they are very closely implicated in issues of health within the workplace, particularly in terms of musculoskeletal injuries caused by the strain of moving heavy pallets in often confined and unevenly floored areas.

Sentry Protection Products Rack Sentry Cut-out
The judges favoured the Sentry Protection Products Rack Sentry Cut-out for its unique combination of robust design and low cost. In densely-packed modern warehouses, there is always a high risk of collision between forklift trucks and racking systems. These pose both a safety risk, in terms of equipment collapses, and a business cost in terms of repairs.

Many forms of racking protection system are available, and the judges noted their contribution to improved safety. However unlike floor-fixed protection systems which often entail a floor repair as well as replacement after an accident, the Rack Sentry Cut-out is easily and quickly made good—"Like an airbag for racking" one judge suggested.

Cooper SH NearGuard Safety Alert System
The Cooper SH NearGuard system is an excellent example of how technology can form part of best practice to ensure that moving machinery and personnel always maintain a minimum safe distance. With ‘struck-by’ accidents the most common form of workplace transport incidents, health and safety practitioners welcome anything that can be done to reduce them.

Using RFID technology to track the location of personnel relative to moving industrial trucks is undoubtedly a trend that will accelerate in future. The judges also welcomed the potential to ‘hard wire’ the system into the controls of a lift truck to activate an automatic stop when truck and person draw too close.

Finally there are also potential benefits to pedestrian awareness of moving machinery as a result of enforced obligations to wear an RFID tag.
