France currently has 28 urban light rail systems comprising 6 metros and 22 tramways. This is nearly three times the 10 light rail systems now operating in the UK. Since 1992 Graham Jellett has, as an ordinary farepaying passenger, visited and studied all 28 French systems, travelling extensively on many systems every year. This presentation, supported by the speaker's own photographs and associated tables of data, looks specifically at the 14 tramways inaugurated in France from 2000 to date. Matters discussed include public funding, fares, smart-ticketing, service frequency, audio/visual messaging, stop spacing, payroll tax, passenger capacity, seating layout, disabled access, liveries and other features.
