Doosan & Bobcat equipment excels in Suez expansion

Doosan and Bobcat equipment supplied by Otrac Heavy Equipment, the Heliopolis-based Authorised Dealer for the Doosan and Bobcat ranges in Egypt, has played an important role in the intensive construction works that have been undertaken for the major extension of the Suez Canal, opened in August 2015 by Egyptian President, Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi, and heralded as an historic achievement that will help to boost the country’s economy.

The Suez Canal dates back to the middle of the nineteenth century and the original canal was completed in November 1869. Egypt was the first recorded country to build a man-made canal of this kind across its land for international trade. Connecting the Mediterranean Sea directly with the Red Sea, the Suez Canal is the shortest route between the East and the West.

The Egyptian army began work less than a year ago on the new $8.5 billon extension of the canal, which has deepened the main waterway and provides ships with an additional 35 km (22 mile) channel parallel to the main Suez Canal, as part of a larger undertaking to expand trade along the fastest shipping route between Europe and Asia.

Hatem Ouda, Chairman of Otrac Heavy Equipment, said: “Otrac is an established market leader in Egypt in both Doosan excavators and Bobcat compact loaders, supplying many Doosan and Bobcat machines in both the public and private sectors. As a forward-looking and discerning company with aspirations, Otrac has continued this success, supplying Doosan and Bobcat machines to the Ministry of Defence (MOD) for use on the Suez Canal Extension project.

“Our machines have been taking part in this great project and are now considered a part of Egyptian history – this has been based on the trust placed in Otrac and the confidence shown by the MOD in our capabilities.”

At the inauguration, President el-Sisi praised the efforts of everybody involved: “Egyptians have made a huge effort so as to give the world this gift for development, construction and civilisation. Egyptians have shown their ability to efficiently make history and leap to the future for the prosperity of humanity.”

Among those joining President el-Sisi at the ceremony were French President, Francois Hollande; Russian Prime Minister, Dmitry Medvedev; King Abdullah of Jordan and Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas; Kuwait’s Emir Sheik Sabah Al Ahmed Al Sabah and Greek Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras, also attended.

With the new parallel waterway allowing two-way traffic on the Suez Canal, the Egyptian government aims to more than double annual canal revenues to some $13 billion in less than a decade. Authorities also plan to build an industrial and logistical zone along the canal over the next five years, hoping to draw investment on the vital shipping lane between Asia and Europe for companies eager to place operations along the route.

Mr Outa of Otrac continued: “Our success would not have been possible without the full assistance of and collaboration with Doosan Construction Equipment to fully achieve our goals. We thank all the teams at Doosan and Bobcat who together have been our ‘Real Business Partner’.

“Since we were established in 1992, our company has had the business philosophy of assisting employees to achieve their career dreams, ensuring customers’ success and satisfaction and increasing Doosan market share and reputation in the Egyptian market. We will continue to provide excellent management and our unique aftersales services under our ‘Machine Never Stop’ slogan, to not only maintain but increase our customers’ satisfaction in Doosan and Bobcat products.”
