Drivers Hours Rules – Call FTA!

The Freight Transport Association's Member Advice Centre (FTA/MAC) says that the number of calls on lorry drivers' hours rules, and how the hours are recorded, has more than tripled during the last six months. FTA says that this reflects the extent of concern by lorry operators that they need to properly prepare for the introduction of the new rules from next spring.

FTA's Manager of Compliance Information Services, Sally Thornley, who is responsible for the MAC says, 'Members are obviously making plans for the forthcoming changes – we are being asked more than three times as many questions on drivers' hours and tachograph rules than on any other subject.

'The number of calls on hours and tachograph rules peaked at over 40 per cent of all calls in May when new legislation introduced the mandatory fitment of digital tachographs to all new vehicles, alongside some significant changes to records rules for drivers using both analogue and digital equipment. Now, six months later, the number of calls remains high, as transport operations are faced with understanding and managing the new rules and technology.

'We are anticipating a further upsurge in demand for information in the first quarter of 2007 during the lead-up to the new EU rules which take effect from 11 April. The change of rules means that virtually all aspects of the legislation will change in some way.'

The call traffic at the MAC has been used to inform key presentations being made during FTA's current round of Transport Manager seminars. The remaining seminars in the season will be held at Edinburgh on 31 October, Durham on 9 November, Yeovil on 15 November, Sheffield on 21 November, Bradford on 29 November and Heathrow on 6 December.
