DS Smith Recycling has saved the day for Shooting Star CHASE, a children’s hospice service, after the charity’s existing Christmas card recycling arrangement fell through.
Shooting Star CHASE had signed up to collect Christmas cards as part of its fundraising activity as the charity would receive a cash incentive. However, by the end of January, its offices were bursting at the seams with greetings cards and faced having to send them all to landfill. After reading about DS Smith Recycling’s involvement in the Woodland Trust Christmas card recycling scheme, run with Marks & Spencer, the charity contacted DS Smith Recycling to find out if they could help.
The staff at DS Smith Recycling’s Croydon facility reacted quickly to organise the collection of over 700kg of greetings cards within the week. The company also donated £100 to Shooting Star CHASE to make up for lost funds.
Katy Jones, senior community fundraiser for Shooting Star CHASE, comments: "Our staff, volunteers and supporters all worked extremely hard to collect Christmas cards in order to raise money for the hospice. We’re incredibly grateful to DS Smith Recycling for saving the day and would like to thank them for their generous donation."
Alan Asher, manager at DS Smith Recycling’s Croydon depot, adds: "We were very saddened to hear about Shooting Star CHASE’s predicament so we were more than happy to step in and help. Every collection makes a difference when it comes to reducing the amount of waste going to landfill and it would have been a real shame to see all their efforts wasted."
Shooting Star CHASE is a charity that supports over 500 families living in western London, Surrey and West Sussex with a child or teenager not expected to reach their 19th birthday. For more information, visit www.shootingstarchase.org.uk.
