External racking is cost-effective high-volume storage

Pro-Dek Storage Systems has completed two external racking installations with integral weather protection for Boys and Boden Ltd, a long-established firm of builders merchants operating in Powys and Shropshire.

The installations at the company's Welshpool and Shrewsbury premises, which have provided some 1500 linear metres of storage, are part of a continuing investment programme designed to protect timber stocks from the weather at all its sites instead of leaving them exposed to the elements.

Pro-Bolt cantilever racking with integral roof canopies from Pro-Dek was chosen as a cost-effective solution that provided space for large quantities of timber to be stored under cover on a relatively small footprint and also allowed material to be accessed quickly and easily as required.

The installation at Welshpool measures 33 metres long x 13 metres deep x 6.8 metres high, while the Shrewsbury installation measures 29 metres x 22 metres x 6.8 metres. The vertical columns have three arms on each side measuring 1220 mm long and designed to support 1000kg each. The arms are of a bolted design adjustable on a 150mm pitch. Sideloaders are used to handle the timber at both sites, allowing aisle widths to be standardised at only 2660mm.

The racking supports a series of low-profile pitched roofs clad with single skin Plastisol-coated sheeting and including translucent panels to take advantage of natural light. Valley gutters and down-pipes are included, and all steelwork in both installations is hot-dip galvanised for long-term corrosion protection.
