HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAC. This month the Freight Transport Association's Member Advice Centre celebrates its tenth anniversary, having now answered over a quarter of a million calls for help from transport operators.
Prior to 1998 FTA members seeking help and advice on legal and operational issues were served by local FTA offices throughout the country. The establishment of the MAC was designed to provide a national call centre staffed by a dedicated team of expert and experienced transport advisers who are able to provide immediate and comprehensive information and advice.
The MAC deals with a predictable range of subject matters including Construction & Use, tachographs, CPC, health and safety, working time, international and taxation.
The centre received a record 30,000 queries during 2007, with the leading subject being drivers' hours. Over the years drivers' hours, operator licensing and driver licensing have consistently been the major subjects on which members have sought help.
The MAC is staffed by six advisers led by Sally Thornley, FTA's Head of Compliance Information Services. During recent years MAC personnel have also featured as speakers at FTA's quarterly round of legal briefing meetings throughout the UK.
The FTA Member Advice Centre operates Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 5.00pm and is available to FTA members only on 0870 605 0000 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org
The Freight Transport Association represents the interests of companies moving goods by road, rail, sea and air. FTA members operate over 220,000 goods vehicles – almost half the UK fleet. In addition they consign over 90 per cent of the freight moved by rail and over 70 per cent of sea and air freight. FTA's website can be found at www.fta.co.uk
