Health & safety culture under scrutiny at FTA conference

Phillip White, Director of Operational Strategy at the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), will be focusing on health & safety culture as the keynote speaker at the forthcoming Freight Transport Association Safety in Logistics Conference.

Mr White’s presentation will be used to inform delegates how important it is to ensure that safety culture in the workplace is embedded from the top down. He will also attempt to dispel popular myths regarding over-zealous health and safety interpretation, and outline how onerous restrictions can undermine attempts to instil a safety culture.

Philip White said:
"Health and safety is about taking reasonable steps to make sure that workers can come home safe. There are certainly plenty of myths about what you can and cannot do and some unfounded fears about bureaucracy. HSE publishes plenty of advice about how to get it right. I’m looking forward to sharing some of our insights about getting safety culture right at the conference as well as updating delegates on current issues."

The popular FTA conference, which is scheduled to take place at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham on Tuesday 10 June, will recognise the importance of health and safety in the workplace, outlining how essential it is to engage with all employees.

FTA’s event is aimed at managers who have a responsibility for health and safety within transport and logistics, and will provide a full insight into key industry initiatives, best practice and enforcement focus areas, helping them ensure safety culture is embedded ‘from the top down’ in their own organisations.

Other key sessions and speakers at the FTA conference will include:
Load securing – Mark Horton, Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA)
Vehicle runaways – Simon Bland, Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
Home deliveries – Chris Jerman, John Lewis
Driver behaviour – Astrid van der Burgt, Kuehne + Nagel
Multi-decked vehicles/trailers – Richard Owens, Don-Bur
The conference will provide road transport operators’ health and safety managers with the ideal opportunity to update themselves on other industry initiatives, including an overview of key messages that form part of the HSE strategic plans.

This year’s Safety in Logistics Conference is sponsored by Brigade Electronics and Volvo, and is supported by IOSH and IRTE.

Places are available for FTA members at a cost of £325 plus VAT for the first delegate and £275 plus VAT for subsequent delegates, and for non-FTA members is £385 plus VAT for the first delegate and £345 plus VAT for subsequent delegates.
