HILO-PSS new Romanian factory wins order from DHL for Tesco

HiLo-PSS Group's €11 million investment in its world class manufacturing facility in Brasov, Romania is already paying dividends with a order to fit out Tesco's new 34,125m2 facility in Bratislava, Slovak Republic to accommodate the company's range of clothing. Won by HiLo-PSS on a competitive tender against two other major European manufacturers, the prestigious facility will support Tesco's continued expansion in the Czec Republic, Hungary, Poland and the Slovak Republic.

HiLo-PSS was invited to tender for the project by DHL, with whom the company has had a long standing relationship spanning 23 years. The work was carried out with meticulous attention to detail by HiLo-PSS's highly trained European team who had to work closely with local builders to ensure completion of the project within 69 days. The single storey construction, which is 9.8 metres high, has been fitted out by HiLo-PSS with wide aisle pallet storage together with low level hanging garment racks.

HiLo-PSS specified its Premierack wide aisle adjustable pallet racking for the contract, comprising of 2700mm long x 1100mm deep frames, which has been utilised to accommodate 29,434 full pallet and 2,340 half pallet locations. As the racking is being serviced by wide aisle reach truck for pallets located above the first beam level and by low lever order pickers below, HiLo-PSS specified its Sacrificial Legs on the first and last three frames of each rack run where it considered the racking would be most vulnerable to impact from order pickers. HiLo-PSS Sacrificial Leg provides a cost-effective and time saving solution to the problem of repairing damaged frames. A removable section, fitted to the bottom of the front upright, can be quickly and easily replaced without dismantling the frame and more importantly removing the pallets supported by the frame.

Challenged with creating four picking locations without using carton live storage, HiLo-PSS used white-faced melamine shelves set at an angle so that they will not roll but still enable operators to pull product forward. In addition, HiLo-PSS constructed full-length lane guides utilising low cost plastic tubing and purpose-designed clips to enable the easy location of product on the melamine shelves.

"HiLo-PSS won the contract on price, quality of product and its experience and expertise", said Phil Austin, Business Development Manager at DHL. "The site management was first class and the installation was carried out on budget, on time and as specified. We are delighted with the product specification and can honestly say it was a job well done".

HiLo-PSS new 12,500 sq metre facility in Romania, centrally located in the fastest growing region of Europe, has been specifically built and equipped to provide customers with world-class manufacturing. Comprising of a Gasparini rolling mill, slitting and rolling facility, paint plant and accessory production plant, the state-of-the-art facility ensures HiLo-PSS postion in the forefront of racking and shelving manufacture in Europe.

Commenting, James Delap, Managing Director of HiLo-PSS Group said, "We chose Romania for the facility as it is in close proximity to world class steel suppliers, has an abundance of manufacturing skills and a network of specialist suppliers providing a support infrastructure for engineering and product development. Our Romanian factory has enabled us to become a truly European company, challenging our competitors on pricing, response times, quality and innovation."
