Historic Leeds logistics company reports growth as local businesses profit from regional hub operation

Walkers Transport, the Leeds based specialist distributor of palletised goods has announced healthy growth following one of its busiest Christmas trading periods. The business whose Leeds depot has operated as the Northern hub of the Palletways network since late 2012 has grown its turnover to £17 million; an 8% increase year on year.
The Leeds depot processes over 3,500 pallets each night providing a 24 hour freight forwarding service for all the Northern based pallets moved within the Palletways network. The hub has streamlined delivery for Northern England and Scotland, increasing efficiencies significantly and providing regional customers with greater scope for next day delivery.

Graham Short MD of Walkers Transport said; “Walkers Northern hub operation based in Morley has significantly benefitted the region. Aside from the creation of new jobs, the efficiencies created by the Northern hub have had significant environmental benefits with fewer lorries on the roads for fewer hours.”

Previously all pallets had to be processed at the Lichfield depot based in Staffordshire, meaning a huge deviation for many vehicles, adding mileage, costs and time to the operation.

Graham continued; “One of the key benefits for regional businesses is that the pallets now leave Yorkshire customers at 6 or 7pm as opposed to 4-5pm as before. This means our customers can process next day deliveries until much later in the day, a benefit they pass on to their customers.”

In addition to the benefits of the Northern hub operation, Walkers Transport has taken steps to improve its performance and productivity with the installation of TomTom’s LINK tracking device across its service fleet. This not only helps with route planning but also verifies timesheets, automates mileage reporting and fulfils Duty of Care obligations. The company also reported an 8% fuel cost saving in August 2014 following the implementation of a safe driving programme which reduced speeding, quick acceleration, and sudden braking which are all considered to contribute to increased fuel costs.
