Jungheinrich successfully implements major logistics project

Jungheinrich has recently completed one of its biggest ever automated materials handling projects on behalf of Keller & Kalmbach GmbH – one of Germany’s leading fastener, screw and machine tool wholesalers.

Located just outside Nuremberg, Keller & Kalmbach GmbH’s new distribution centre includes a pallet racking warehouse with 35,000 storage locations, an automated small parts warehouse with storage for 164,000 boxes, an automated small parts warehouse for 8,000 trays and an order picking area designed to cope with a fast throughput of orders. All order picking stations were set up to support order picking from pallets as well as from boxes and trays and a Jungheinrich Warehouse Management System (WMS) is used to manage all of the storage areas.

"Thanks to this multi-faceted system, Keller & Kalmbach will be able to achieve the desired flexibility in deploying its staff in the most efficient way possible," comments Dr. Stefan Seemüller, who is responsible for Automatic Systems at Jungheinrich Germany.

The project – which, according to Dr. Ingomar Schubert, Head of Supply Chain Management at Keller & Kalmbach, represented "the most ambitious construction project in our company’s history" – was implemented in less than 18 months from the time the contract was awarded. "Being able to stick to the time plan for a project of this size is critical to the customer" says Dr. Stefan Seemüller

Steve Richmond, General Manager for Jungheinrich UKs Systems & Projects Division, comments: "Jungheinrich has significantly developed its capabilities in the area of integrated solutions and automation over recent years. The company operates an international network of systems and projects divisions with a focus on tailored solutions, from manual warehousing systems (including warehouse management software and wireless communications) to fully automated warehouse systems incorporating stacker cranes, mini load systems, conveyors and automated guided vehicles. Solutions can be manual, fully automated or a combination of the two. Jungheinrich provides complete customer support from the initial consultation, planning and project management to system integration and after-sales support during ongoing operations."
