Jungheinrich UK Ltd has supplied and installed a narrow aisle pallet racking system with over 7200 pallet locations for RDC – the world’s largest IT disposal and recycling company.
RDC had operated from four separate buildings in Witham, Essex, but consolidated the business in one purpose-built 340,000 sq ft facility set on a 22 acre site in Braintree earlier this year.
The move to the new site allowed the company to effectively double its pallet storage capacity.
"We sought a racking supplier that could work around our initial design but could also work quickly and efficiently alongside other trades as we refurbished our new store," explains Chris Garn, RDC’s Head of Customer Services.
After a competitive tender process, RDC awarded the supply and install contract to Jungheinrich.
Although it’s best known for its forklift trucks and other materials handling equipment, Jungheinrich has offered a full range of racking and storage systems as a core part of its product portfolio for over 20 years.
From initial project design using the latest CAD technology to hand over, Jungheinrich supplies a complete range of racking systems and accessories, including adjustable pallet racking, drive-in and drive through systems, mobile, cantilever and high bay racking, pallet and carton live storage as well as long span and small parts shelving.
The RDC racking scheme is used to store a range of computer hardware which has been through the RDC refurbishment process and is awaiting delivery to a new user. Some 75 per cent of all the units collected by RDC are re-used with the remainder stripped down and recycled as raw materials.
The racking system is 6 levels high and the aisles are 2250 mm wide which allows picking to be undertaken by lift truck from the upper beams at the same time as workers pick faster moving lines from the ground and first floor levels. The aisles are served by articulated forklift truck technology.
"The Jungheinrich installation team was very professional. They worked quickly and efficiently and the final project sign off process was very impressive. The project was completed on budget and ahead of schedule, says Chris Garn.
Jungheinrich’s racking comes with a two year warranty against defects in quality and a five year warranty against the steel structures themselves.
"Because we are aware of the high importance that each installation process bears, we provide professional installation and management teams," says Steve Richmond, director of Jungheinrich’s Systems & Projects Division.
"Whether working on greenfield sites or within existing facilities, our dedicated expert resources will ensure that the installation complies with all the relevant industry standards whilst co-ordinating the site activities in a controlled and safe manner," he adds.
