Krone Trailers market leading Multi-Safe Load Securing System impressed the judges at this year’s Motor Transport Awards and reached the final six in the ‘Innovation’ category.
What the judges were told:
PROBLEM / ISSUE:
Regulation 100 of the construction and use regulations, 1986, states:
"All loads must be physically secured other than by their own weight."
It goes on to say that if a truck goes over, the load must remain in place.
Operators have long faced 4 key issues concerning the loading of trucks and semi-trailers:
1. Safety/Legal – employees; general public. Corporate responsibilities.
Compliance with loading regulations.
2. Load Security – damage to loads; theft; securing in transit.
3. Commercial – minimising empty or part loads; diversity of loads, improving ROI.
4. Regulatory – EN codes for load security equipment must be obtained if operators are to deliver into European destinations.
If a load should become detached and cause injury or loss, the driver and or owner/loader can be prosecuted under regulation 100 of the construction and use regulations 1986.
If in the same circumstances a fatality occurs, the driver, loader, owner and company directors can be prosecuted under the Road Traffic Act 1988 and charged with corporate manslaughter (introduced in April 2000).
A solution was required to;
a) Minimise loss or damage through accidents
b) Enable operators to handle a wider variety of loads and thereby increase profitability.
HOW THE INNOVATION WAS ARRIVED AT:
Krone Multi-Safe Load Securing System.
The calculation of load securing is based upon DIN EN 12195-1 and guideline VDI 2700. (German Engineer’s Association)
The challenge was to find a universal mechanism which could provide the basis of a load-securing system with multiple load permutations e.g. paper rolls, steel coils, palleted beverages, kegs, tubing, sheet metal and miscellaneous individual panels.

Multi Safe System Components:-
A. Multi Lock Side Rave (Krone -Patent)
The multi lock side rave is supplied with 126 strapping points on each side of the vehicle which gives in excess of 3,000 options of securing the load; each of these strapping points is 2 tons having maximum permissible load of 8 tons over a 1 metre length. And is easily accessible with or without the curtains opened In addition to this all components are KTL coated giving a 10 year rust perforation warranty.
B. Multi Block Loading Beam. Transverse Loading Option
The Krone Multi Block Loading Beam has 22 load securing points positioned on the load floor transversely and is locked into the Multi Lock Side rave.
C. Multi Wall (additional wall which can be positioned along the trailer length to suit the load)
The certified 8 ton Multi Wall system offers an additional wall in the trailer.
The plug in uprights are fixed into the Multi Block shoe which in turn is fixed in to the Multi Lock Side Rave; the uprights are secured using standard load securing straps at 45 degrees to the wall.
D. Multi Reel
The Multi Reel system has been specially developed for securing awkward cable reels or rolls of paper, and comprises adaptor plates, wedges and stops.
E. Multi Block Paper
To prevent movement of paper rolls in transit, the Multi Block paper system has been developed using the Multi Lock/Multi block combination. Paper rolls can be fixed horizontally with minimum effort and maximum load security.
F. Multi Screw (Screwable Pallet Stop)
In contrast to welded components, the screwable pallet stop, can be quickly and easily fitted or removed from the Multi Lock Side Rave making them more efficient, safer and more mobile.
G. Multi Lash (Screwable lashing rings)
Multi Lash allows the universal safe strapping of all hooks. The flexible strapping eyes make it possible to put a securing strap into the Multi Lock Side rave profile at just the right angle to ensure straps are flat and offering maximum load security.
H. Chain Adaptor
This option provides a solution for all other types of hooks or spansets as well as chains and by using 2 of the Multi Lock side rave lashing points the strapping capability is doubled to 4 tons allowing it to be used anywhere on the trailer.
I. Captive Strapping.
Minimises loss of straps ensuring correct numbers of straps are available to securely load the trailer.
J. Strap Retainers
The simple but effective strap retainer allows pre-setting of load straps prior to loading, removing the need of the driver to throw the straps over high loads or climb onto a loaded trailer. Straps are easily removed by gently pulling down onto load.
K. Multi Fix
The Multi Fix system secures pipes, round steel, plate steel or any other challenging shaped items, offering maximum security in the minimum of time, whatever the shape of the load the Multi Fix system offers a solution.
