Alphason Designs is a brand leader in the manufacture of home entertainment furniture selling their inventive designs which are available in over 4,000 outlets, from independent electrical retailers to the major supermarket chains. The business has been very successful; its rapid expansion has meant that the company outgrew its existing storage facilities located in and around Wigan.
Recognising the need to rationalise and centralise their storage and distribution, Alphason Designs has recently moved into a 40,000 sq ft new warehouse and distribution centre located close to the company's headquarters in Atherton. When Alphason first moved their stock into this facility it had to be block stacked with a very restrictive limit of two pallets high in order to protect the products from possible damage.
Production Director for Alphason Designs, Norman Lewis, selected LINPAC Storage Systems to design, manufacture and install a racking solution which would double the storage capacity of the warehouse.
He comments, “I was impressed by the urgency LINPAC put on the project, and the detailed way that they proposed the storage solution. Although they were competitively priced they weren't the cheapest, however their system was far more versatile than those offered by their competitors. They were very accommodating with design changes and I was further impressed by the professional way they went about the project once we'd given them the go-ahead.”
The innovative solution combines drive-in racking with adjustable pallet racking in a configuration that not only maximises the storage capacity of the warehouse but also enables greater efficiency in stock movement. Bulk stock is stored in five high, five deep drive-in racking that runs down the sides of the warehouse. This robust drive-in system has been designed for fast, efficient and safe handling of stock. It features substantial box-section uprights, heavy duty entry guides, profiled pallet rails and angled column protectors.
Bulk product from the drive-in racking is used to replenish the stock held in the runs of adjustable pallet racking that have been installed alongside the drive-in. The two central runs in the warehouse are the despatch racks which are used for picking. These runs are shorter than the rest to allow space for a marshalling area for picked stock in front of the despatch bays.
“We are very happy with the service LINPAC has given us and their versatile storage system. When we decide to expand our premises, we'll be talking to them again,” Lewis concludes.
