Lister Hospital improves medicine labeling with Episys Ultimate

The Pharmacy Manufacturing Unit (PMU) at the Lister Hospital in Stevenage, which is part of the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, is to benefit from faster production of labels and improved security as a result of installing the Ultimate Platinum system from Episys, a global information technology solutions and services company.

By using Ultimate Platinum, the Lister’s PMU will be able to produce labels with clearer information – making them easier for patients to read – and the hospital will be able to produce specific labels for certain drugs and medicines as required. Crucially, they will also now be able to produce labels that are licensed by the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency). Episys has also supplied Lister Hospital with the Epson TMC3400 Colour Label Printer. This will be used in the Aseptic preparation area to label medicines and allows warnings and directions to be highlighted in colour on the labels, which should improve the safety of drug administration

Stephen Almond, Principal Pharmacist of Technical Services at PMU, said, "Our current system is nowhere near specialist enough and doesn’t give us the ability to produce worksheets – nor do we have much control over the labels we produce. Currently, even minor changes can be made only by an external consultant, making system management highly time-consuming and frustrating. Episys Ultimate will change this and give us total control over the look and feel of all labels we produce. Our existing system is difficult to adapt and we rely on a third party to make changes, but with Ultimate Platinum, we will be able to change instantly the design of our labels when we need to."

The system, which will be fully implemented by the end of 2011 will also include the Ultimate Pharmacy Worksheets Module. This will enable the PMU to produce Worksheets, Patient Information Leaflets, the main production labels and any supplementarty labels as part of the same print request. All of which will significantly increase efficiencies and reduce transcription errors. Ultimate Platinum is CFR part 11 compliant and fully validated. The PMU at the Lister decided to purchase the Validation Document Set and Installation Qualification Documents from Episys to ensure that they are compliant with the MHRA requirements of a licensed unit and to help support their own validation process by reducing the resource they needed to commit to this process. Ultimate Platinum will also allow PMU to increase its capacity without having to increase its workforce allowing them to compete for new contract and potentially inject more revenue into the trust’

Derek Buchanan, Chief Executive Officer at Episys, said, "The PMU will find the Ultimate Platinum system very easy-to-use, and changes can be made and the system managed internally – a huge advantage that was absent from its previous system. Having seen a demonstration of the Episys system, the PMU could see straight away how flexible it was, and its host of benefits will prove of great value once fully operational".
