Logistics company Kuehne and Nagel awarded the Carbon Trust Standard

Kuehne + Nagel UK has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard, a mark of excellence awarded to organisations in recognition of their measurement, management and reduction of carbon emissions.

To achieve the Standard, Kuehne + Nagel worked together with the Carbon

Trust to deliver a 4.1% reduction in CO2 emissions over a period of three

years, demonstrating commitment to the programme at all levels within the

organisation.

A key driver of change throughout the company has been the 94-strong

network of "Environment Champions" who have been trained and

empowered to make local decisions on environmental issues as well as

raise awareness. They have been responsible for ensuring efficient use

of lighting and heating across Kuehne + Nagel's sites and implementing

local recycling programmes, some of which have seen recycling rates

increase by up to 20%.

Further initiatives, specifically relating to road transport, have included all

drivers receiving Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving (SAFED) training, a reduction

in the maximum speed of articulated lorries and the introduction of

aerodynamic trailers to the Kuehne + Nagel fleet.

"As an international organisation, we are fully committed to continually reducing our impact on the globe," says Tim Scharwath, President, Kuehne +

Nagel North West Europe. "We have also locally implemented the company's

Global Facility Carbon Calculator, a tool which enables Kuehne +

Nagel to record and track emissions at all its sites around the world."

Once awarded, the Carbon Trust Standard is renewable every two years

ensuring that companies continue their commitment to reducing emissions.

Harry Morrison, General Manager of the Carbon Trust Standard commented:

"Being certified with the Carbon Trust Standard is proof that an

organisation has taken genuine action to reduce its impact on climate

change by cutting its carbon emissions. We congratulate Kuehne + Nagel

UK on this achievement.

"Both businesses and consumers share a desire for one, credible way

to prove an organisation has not only measured, but actually reduced its

carbon emissions year-on-year without the use of offsetting. The Carbon

Trust Standard provides this credibility and we encourage more organisations

to follow Kuehne + Nagel in making this commitment."
