LXE targets ports applications with new addition to its Thor family of vehicle-mount computers

Modular 12-key front panel lets intermodal facilities choose the keyboard best suited for each operator’s task

Rugged mobile computer brand LXE, part of the Global Resource Management business unit of EMS Technologies, today announced a 12-key version of the LXE Thor™ vehicle-mount computer, targeting all Intermodal operations. The fully mappable simplified keyboard is designed for specialised tasks within a port or warehouse, and complements the full QWERTY keyboard version of the computer launched on March 21, 2011. Both front panels are interchangeable with the Thor device’s industry-leading Atom processor running Windows® Compact Embedded.

"Our objective with the design of any mobile computer is to maximise the productivity of the operator using that device," said Ian Davies, Country Manager LXE UK. "Nowhere is the need for productivity more pressing than in ports and intermodal facilities. The Thor vehicle-mount computer’s multiple front panels allow a port to give different operators technology that is purpose-built for their specific roles. Productivity gains can be immediate and measurable."

In a port, a gantry crane operator could utilise the full QWERTY keyboard, while a prime mover operator might use the 12-key configuration. Each key on the 12-key configuration is fully mappable, either to a single command, or to a string of commands. According to EMS Global Resource Management vice president of product management Bill Roeder, "The ability to execute an entire process with a single keystroke makes the Thor device even more powerful as an automation tool. When one considers the changing demands placed on yard operations today, a solution as flexible and scalable as the Thor computer can offer tremendous value."
