Manufacturers’ demand for better goods protection drives enquiries to Spaciotempo at Multimodal 2012

The UK’s soggy Spring and the need for logistics firms to satisfy manufacturers’ ever-increasing demand for better protection for their goods has fuelled a rise in enquiries for temporary loading canopies.

Temporary building manufacturer, supplier and installer Spaciotempo UK Ltd says it experienced heavy interest in the canopies from logistics and transport managers who visited its stand at the Multimodal exhibition last week.

The company was making its debut at the show, which was held at the NEC in Birmingham, and showcased its range of products, receiving hundreds of enquiries over the three day event.

Predominant among them were questions about the loading canopies, which resemble temporary buildings without walls and are used as shelters for lorries and trucks when they pull up to the loading bay.

Scott Jameson, Spaciotempo’s Director of Sales, said: "The cold and wet weather outside the show was a constant reminder of the conditions logistics firms face when ensuring that they keep customers’ goods in pristine condition when transporting them.

"It was definitely a factor, in conjunction with manufacturers putting the pressure on delivery companies to reduce wastage and increasingly insisting that loading and unloading takes place undercover because of the damage that rain can cause to cardboard boxes.

"When they address that, companies are able to get larger, more prestigious contracts, while many also see it as a way to increase service levels."

Spaciotempo, who supplied canopies to whole host of companies last year, including Jaguar Land Rover and Black Country transport firm Geodis Calberson, also reported strong interest in its temporary warehouse and storage buildings and retractable tunnels.

Mr Jameson said that talking to visitors and other exhibitors confirmed the company’s belief that, while other areas of the country’s industry are struggling, the logistics industry appears to be in rude health.

He added: "The footfall on our stand over the three days was very good indeed and there were plenty of companies asking about temporary buildings to help them increase their storage space.

"Companies were making enquiries because they were extending their operations or had contracts coming up that meant they required extra space, which is a good sign.

"There were a few comments about the price of diesel, of course, but everyone we spoke to was generally upbeat. You really got the impression that the logistics industry is booming."

Spaciotempo also used the show to mark 40 years in the business, having started life in the UK as TempAstor in 1972. Back then, it supplied one temporary building a month – it now sells and rents out hundreds of temporary buildings each year.

Manufactured in-house using an anodised aluminium frame with uPVC panel or steel cladding walls and rigorously tested to high levels of endurance, Spaciotempo’s temporary buildings perform as well as permanent structures, while still delivering instant and flexible storage space within a matter of days.

The company is also pioneering temporary buildings supplied as turnkey packages – complete with solid flooring, temperature control, lighting, secure doors and windows, as well as an eco-friendly thermo-inflated roof.
