Reigate & Banstead Borough Council quickly located a stolen ride-on mower thanks to high-tech satellite vehicle tracking from Masternaut Three X. The real-time fleet management system alerted the Council of the theft and the equipment was tracked accurately to a location approximately 60 miles away in Harlow, Essex.
"The mower was taken from its depot in Redhill on a Friday evening. As soon as we looked on the Masternaut system, we could see exactly where it was in Harlow. We were delighted to have recovered it because it is a valuable and necessary piece of grounds maintenance equipment," says Ken Dodds, Fleet Manager, Reigate & Banstead Borough Council.
The Council is trialling the system to improve the security and use of its ride-on mowers, park maintenance vehicles (vans and four-wheel drive pickups) and street sweepers. It has already identified spare capacity within the existing fleet, eliminating the need to purchase a new replacement vehicle. The system will also be used with the Council’s parking services fleet.
For street sweeping, the system provides a live view of the sweepers in action as well as historical reports, showing previous activity with street details. It shows exactly when the road sweeping brushes are switched on to clean the roads and when they are switched off for travelling between sites. The added advantage of the system is that it also provides lone-worker security to the street sweeper drivers.
"We had seen the system in action with Crawley Borough Council and we were impressed with the Council’s efficiency gains and savings. From what we saw, we felt that the system would do everything we would need it do within our own borough. With the need to reduce costs while improving service levels, the system will give us greater control over our resources. We are aiming for better utilisation of our fleet and Masternaut will provide a big picture view of our vehicles, allowing us to monitor and manage their use as well as improve route planning. It has already helped us save money on a vehicle we were going to replace by showing us that we have enough capacity within the existing fleet," says Ken Dodds.
"We are also looking at GreenerFleet, Masternaut’s carbon reduction for monitoring driving behaviour and lowering vehicle emissions," he adds.
