New Flake Purifier commissioned at Dagenham Closed Loop Recycling plant

The first of S+S Group's new Flake Purifier to be installed in the UK has been commissioned at Closed Loop Recycling's Dagenham plant which converts 35,000 tons of used PET and HDPE bottles into raw material for new food and drink packaging every year. The new Flake Purifier uses an advanced combination of NIR (Near Infra Red) and CCD camera technologies to reliably sort mixed plastics flakes by both colour and polymer type. The new highly sensitive technology enables separation at a high throughput rate matching that of the rest of the plant.

This new installation augments the S+S metal removal and colour sorting systems installed when the Dagenham plant was opened in mid-2009 with the capacity to convert 35,000 tons of used PET and HDPE bottles into raw material for new food and drink packaging every year.

"When we opened our Dagenham plant last year (2009) it was the first to use state of the art technology to sort, wash and super clean both PET and HDPE bottles meeting EU and US FDA standards," Says Closed Loop's MD, Chris Dow, "taking 875 million plastic bottles out of the export and landfill channels. We are now processing more than 20% (twenty per cent) of all the plastic bottles recycled in the UK and the new S+S Flake Purifier enhances our capability to deliver high quality recycled plastic flake to food container manufacturers."
