New Scales met at AV Dawson Quayside

Multi Modal Specialists AV Dawson has docked their largest ship to date on the North Sea Supply Base in Middlesbrough following £3.2 million investment in their facilities last year.

The MV Lone owned by SAL Heavy Lift is a cargo vessel measuring 160.5m by 27.9m with a deadweight of 12,501 tonne, making it the longest and widest ship to have used the quayside facilities. The Lone arrived during the night of the 12th February to collect materials for the construction of another specialist vessel in Singapore

The vessel is equipped with two large cranes with a combined lift capacity of 2000 tonne which have been used to load on board , the large sections of equipment, which was constructed in the UK.

The AV Dawson team also undertook the largest conventional cargo unloaded in its history, when the Flinter Atlantic arrived at the quayside in December with 9306 tonnes of Maize. Discharge was by two AV Dawson Gottwald harbour cranes over a two day period.

Gary Dawson, Managing Director for AV Dawson has said “Having the MV Lone utilise our quayside demonstrates that the on-going investments made to increase and improve the capabilities of the quayside are being well received and are already paying off.

“This is a huge step forward not only for all of the team here at AV Dawson but also for the Teesside region as it highlights the growing capabilities of the area to service large industries around the world.”

The deepwater quay is one of a number of recent investments made by AV Dawson including a £2.6 intermodal rail terminal, which provides freight firms with a direct link to the East Coast Mainline and the company also opened a new state of the art £6.5 million Automotive Steel Distribution Centre last week which will support the work of Tata Steel and car giants Nissan.

Ship’s Agent, Cockfield Knight, also part of the AV Dawson group oversaw the consolidation of this cargo by road and sea prior to acting as port agents for SAL Line to oversee this large ship visiting the AV Dawson facility.
Richard Booth, General Manager of Cockfield Knight, adds, “We are very experienced at handling complicated project cargo shipments and offer a hands on service which is recognised and appreciated by our customers.”

As well as port agency Cockfield Knight offer full customs documentation, ship chartering and freight forwarding service to our customers.
