Largest pasta producer converts supply chain to reusable pallets

World’s largest pasta producer has converted the Italian supply chain to reusable pallets

CHEP, a firm in pallet pooling solutions, announces a landmark agreement with Barilla, the world’s largest pasta producer, headquartered in Parma, Italy.

This agreement will see Barilla converting the majority of its domestic pallet flows in Italy to CHEP’s reusable pallets, reinforcing both companies' commitment to sustainability and operational excellence.

“Our commitment to sustainability and operational excellence drives every decision we make”, says Roberto Magnani, Vice President of Logistics at Barilla.

“CHEP's sustainability credentials, high-quality standards and innovative digital solutions align perfectly with our commitment to reducing waste, optimizing logistics, and ensuring product safety.

"This collaboration represents a significant step toward a more sustainable future for Barilla and the communities we serve.”

Converting these pallet flows to CHEP’s reusable platforms will assist in Barilla achieving environmental savings per year.

This new agreement will also allow the company to benefit from the increased pallet availability, optimum service levels and end-to-end supply chain management offered by CHEP.

In addition, CHEP’s state-of-the-art supply chain diagnostics and digital capabilities will offer Barilla deeper insights into its supply chain, enabling continuous improvement, waste elimination and innovation.

The continuous partnership between CHEP and Barilla began in 2009 in Italy and expanded to Europe in 2018.

Today’s agreement will see the conversion of the majority of the remaining flows to CHEP pallets from February 2025 and is expected to be completed within eight months.

This strategic move will enable Barilla to focus on their core business while leveraging CHEP’s expertise in pallet management.

Luca Rossi, Vice-President, European Key Accounts at CHEP, says: “Barilla’s decision to switch to CHEP pallets supports pallet pooling as the preferred solution for sustainable, efficient and cost-effective pallet management, especially in complex supply chains.

“This agreement not only underscores the strong relationship and trust we have built with Barilla over the years, but also highlights the resilient performance we have delivered across their business.

"It paves the way for further collaboration in areas like digital innovation, transport optimisation, sustainability and cost efficiency, ensuring we continue to drive value together."
