Budget supermarket Lidl is planning to open a new distribution centre near Ower, Hampshire, which could result in 500 lorry movements a day.
Plans for the new warehouse, near J2 of the M27, which are under public consultation, describe a new facility employing 200 people, including a transport manager and three transport supervisors.
A Lidl spokesman says "Our current distribution centre in Weston-super-Mare is running at capacity, so additional capacity would allow a more efficient operation of this distribution centre and also cater for future expansion. Furthermore, it would reduce the number of miles driven by more than one million miles a year."
The retailer could not say how much would be invested in the DC at this early stage, but it confirmed it would employ external haulage providers at the site.
