Palletforce member’s fundraising challenge

A transport clerk swapped trucks for a motorbike to raise over £800 for a woman who is the only known survivor of a rare illness.

Archie Ormondroyd, who works at Palletforce member Redhead International in Bradford, completed a sponsored motorbike ride around 19 lakes in the Lake District to help Zoe Firth, of Clayton.

Zoe, 31, who was born with a chromosome abnormality called Long Arm Three is unable to speak or hear, is partially blind and has spondolosis of the spine, a heart defect and epilepsy.

Two other people born with the condition passed away before they were 18 months old and doctors did not expect Zoe to live beyond two years old but she has defied their predictions.

Zoe’s mother Helen is raising money to send Zoe to Disneyland for her 32nd birthday in September so she can meet Mickey Mouse, who she adores.

"I read about Zoe and the appeal and they are very local to me so I wanted to do something to help as I firmly believe that charity starts at home," said Archie, 54, of Great Horton.

"I wanted to raise as much money as possible for Zoe and I am extremely grateful to everyone who has sponsored me so far including Redhead International and Palletforce."

Archie, who has been riding motorcycles for 38 years, tackled his challenge on Friday, July 5 using a 36 year old East German MZ TS250 motorcycle for the ride.

However after making it to Windermere it became clear the bike wasn’t up to the task and Archie had to abandon the mission.

He set out again on Tuesday, July 9, on a Yamaha XJ 600 Diversion and completed the ride in 10 hours.

"This is such a fantastic cause that we were delighted to support Archie’s fundraising efforts to try and make Zoe’s birthday one to remember," said Dave Holland, Sales and Marketing Director at Palletforce.

You can still sponsor Archie by emailing: alano@talktalk.net.
