Reliability is never more important than when it comes to the providing stand-by power – particularly at an airport; in the event of failure to normal power supply an airport must be able to rely completely upon its stand-by power to ensure operations can be continued.
BAA's Stansted Airport in Essex has recently had seven stand-by power systems, using Nickel Cadmium (NiCad) Batteries for various airport functions, installed by Powercell Industrial Battery Engineers Ltd. An eighth system is currently being installed. The batteries will provide stand-by power for various airport systems and will be maintained by Powercell over the next five years.
Powercell provided a like-for-like solution, supplying a new version of the Alcad Ni Cam cells originally fitted at Stansted. This provides BAA with assurance in terms of the quality and reliability of the technology. Furthermore, Powercell were able to provide the solution at a competitive price.
In addition to providing a market leading service, another factor in BAA awarding the Essex based company the contract was its long and successful track record at Stansted, as well as at other BAA airports, which has seen the company looking after the maintenance of the baggage handling tow tractors and equipment batteries and chargers.
"We offer a level of service that other companies can't and that makes us standout among the battery suppliers," says Derek Anderson, managing director of Powercell. "Furthermore, being only 20 minutes from Stansted we have six engineers that are able to get airside very quickly at short notice to provide a quality service in an emergency.
Powercell worked closely with BAA to co-ordinate the installation thus ensuring no problems and that important procedures were followed and operations were maintained.
