Powering change: ActionAid joins forces with Good Energy

ActionAid and Good Energy have joined forces to launch their 'Powering Change' partnership to offer customers the chance to help fight poverty and combat climate change – all through one simple phone call.

Unlike most charity corporate partners, 'Powering Change' is not just based on raising funds for ActionAid, but also partners two organisations adamant on fighting climate change.

The 100% renewable electricity supplier Good Energy has pledged £30 to ActionAid for each new customer that signs up to its service and up to £120 for every company that switches its supply. As an example to supporters and businesses across the UK, ActionAid has switched its own electricity supply to Good Energy.

'Powering Change' enables individuals to reduce their environmental impact and lessen the effect of climate change on poor communities for whom climate change is not just another cause of economic loss, but threatens the possibility of escape from poverty. Both organisations see the partnership as a chance to empower individuals to make a positive change to the world.

Juliet Davenport, CEO of Good Energy said "Just supplying renewable energy is not enough; we work to broaden people's understanding of what it is and to promote wider acceptance of its use. We actively encourage individuals and independent organisations to generate their own renewable energy"

Good Energy was formed in 1997 in a bid to combat climate change. It is the only UK electricity supplier that solely provides 100% renewable electricity using wind, sun or running water.

Good Energy is recommended by The GOOD Shopping Guide and achieves its highest rating. It is also the only electricity company to score full marks for its green supply tariff in a recent report published by the National Consumer Council.

ActionAid is strongly committed to tackling climate change. The aid agency does this by helping poor and vulnerable people to adapt to new contexts, and by putting pressure on governments to cut carbon emissions.

The 'Powering Change' partnership aims to keep people thinking green by pledging an extra £10 to ActionAid for each customer after his or her first year.

'Powering Change' not only means that your household or company will be powered by 100% renewable electricity, but through their programme of updates and events, Good Energy will keep you informed with the latest news and developments on renewables and climate change. ActionAid will also keep you up to date with their climate change work in developing countries, including opportunities to further support the 'Powering Change' partnership.

Richard Miller, Executive Director ActionAid said: "Climate change will have the greatest impact on the poorest people around the world and yet these are the people who have contributed the least to the problem. Rising sea levels, food insecurity and water scarcity are already hitting the world's poorest people hard. We hope that this partnership will encourage more people and organisations to join the growing international climate change movement."
