Custom-built racking from Pro-Dek Storage Systems is proving a space-saving solution for storing salvaged and abandoned vehicles at a four-acre site operated by Brantwood Auto Recycling Ltd in north London.
The company, which has been in operation for over 25 years, is an authorised treatment facility for end-of-life vehicles and has contracts with local authorities, insurance companies and housing associations for storing and disposing of vehicles. The number processed at the site has grown considerably, particularly since the Government's scrappage scheme started, and now numbers around 2000 a week.
The racking from Pro-Dek, which can accommodate around 200 cars, allows three to be stored on the same footprint as a single vehicle. It is generally used for cars that are being broken for spares or are in safe custody after being clamped.
Pro-Dek has supplied racking in single-sided and double-sided units, all constructed from heavy-duty hot-rolled universal beam sections and designed to BS5950 (structural use of steelwork), with loadings in accordance with BS6399 Part 1. All components are hot-dip galvanised for long-term protection to BS EN ISO 1461:1999. Vehicles are loaded by fork lift truck on to pairs of arms that are 2000mm long and designed to support 1500kg. The arms are bolted to the vertical beams and adjustable in 100mm increments.
The equipment was supplied for assembly and installation by the customer.
