RAF Wittering get the SSI Treatment

SSI Schaefer have just finished a major project at RAF Wittering, near Ipswich, to design, supply and install a raised storage platform and a goods lift.

RAF Wittering, advised by the Materials Handling Trials Unit, required aircraft parts to be stored on the base rather than in Scotland by Rolls Royce and it was down to project manager Flt Lt Jamie Turnbull to research and implement the best cost-effective solution through the service contract.

The unique storage area designed by SSI Schaefer is located within one of the many aircraft hangers on the base. A raised storage platform was created, longspan shelving and shortspan shelving were installed and the stores footprint made smaller, with a goods lift allowing the store officers to use the raised floor area to double the storage space.

A spokesman for the MOD said:

“Tasked with managing this project, we had to be sure of the design and use of space within the hanger – SSI's planning and experience has enabled the installation to be carried out effectively and efficiently, with the finished result being the creation of ideal storage space for aircraft parts.”

Peter Round, SSI Schaefer Defence Industry Account Manager, said:

“We are delighted with the new storage system in place at RAF Wittering – working alongside the MHTU has ensured that we have created the best possible solution to fit in with particular MOD requirements. We will continue to build on our partnership to develop and design the most innovative, yet cost effective solutions for each individual project.”
