Ready for Anything at DSV

Toyota Material Handling UK has worked with one of the fastest growing road transport networks in the UK to provide a forklift fleet that can deliver the goods.

The DSV Road site in Humberside has a 9,100m2 cross-dock facility which operates around the clock with a capacity to unload more than 380 inbound and 300 outbound trucks each day. A fleet of 15 Tonero gas powered forklifts, with capacities ranging from 1.8 to 2.5 tonne, has been chosen after intensive trials with three manufacturers.

A popular choice with all the team, the Tonero was praised by operators for the precision of its controls, allowing them to move quickly, even in tight spaces around the yard.

The instrument panel overhead guard and mast have been redesigned to give the operator the clearest view possible, vital for operations like DSV where operators make frequent changes of direction

Mike Holmes, Warehouse Manager at DSV commented: “A lot of our groupage work involves out of profile pallets, so being able to manoeuvre the truck precisely is very important. The mini-levers on the Tonero help to prevent load damage by reducing driver fatigue, even over a long shift.”

The Tonero also features Toyota's unique System of Active Stability (SAS), which act like an extra pair of eyes and ears, actively working to stabilise the truck if a potentially dangerous situation is detected.

Holmes adds: “DSV are increasingly making use of back loads to offer customers greater cost efficiency. This makes our turnaround times tighter and places greater pressure on the materials handling fleet. The Tonero rises to the challenge with features that support the driver like self-levelling forks, which not only save time when block stacking pallets, but also help to prevent damage to the goods.”

In addition to a truck that would meet the needs of the operators, DSV also sought a materials handling equipment supplier who could offer the flexibility needed to meet the demands of a growing business.

Holmes concludes: “It was clear to us that Toyota had a winning package. The Tonero is a highly capable truck and they have a real pride in their product and company.”
