Recycling firm takes home gold at industry awards

A thriving recycling company is celebrating after securing a hugely prestigious accolade at a leading industry ceremony last week, which recognises the best businesses across the entire recycling sector UK-wide.

JBS Fibre Recovery, the largest independent mattress recycler in the UK, with sites in Telford, Trowbridge and Bridgend, was awarded Recycling Business of the Year at the Let’s Recycle Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management, an event which recognises the best businesses in the recycling sector.

Despite being less than two years old, JBS Fibre Recovery has already secured its position as the UK’s largest independent mattress recycler, diverting more than 800,000 mattresses from landfill each year. Over the past few months, the firm has secured a number of exclusive contracts to recycle used mattresses from blue chip brands such as Argos, Silentnight, and Travelodge.

John Neill, Founder and Director of JBS Fibre Recovery, said: "We are absolutely delighted to have won this award for excellence, and to have beat such tough competition from other firms across the sector in the process. We are extremely proud of our achievements in the past months and to be recognised in this way is such a privilege.

"Mattresses are a notoriously problematic waste stream and many facilities do not have the resources to process them effectively, with recovery rates often hovering below the 50% mark, meaning the majority of waste is still sent to landfill. Using sophisticated technology and a highly trained team of workers, we have developed a bespoke fibre recovery solution that achieves 100% recycling or reuse rate. Materials we recover can either be used to manufacture new products or sold to produce anything from car matting to plastic bottles and food trays," John concluded.

JBS Fibre Recovery also helped recycle 5,000 mattresses from the athletes’ village at last year’s Olympic Games, and the firm estimates the project diverted 20,000 tonnes from landfill sites alone. The firm has big plans for the future, not only doubling its recycling rate to 1.5 million mattresses by the end of 2013, but it also hopes to significantly expand its timber recycling operations, which currently sees the firm process 500 tonnes per month.

JBS Fibre Recovery Ltd is the largest independent national mattress recycler in the UK and specialises in diverting waste from landfill by ensuring that every component used in the manufacture of mattresses is recycled, reused, or used to generate energy from waste. With depots across the UK, the firm currently recycles over 800,000 mattresses nationwide a year, diverting over 20,000 tonnes from landfill, for clients across a variety of sectors, including local authorities, retail and the domestic market.
