Rugged Mobile Systems launches 7-inch all-in-one in-cab computer

Rugged Mobile Systems has announced a new all-in-one, in-vehicle computer with 7-inch touchscreen display and telematics support that runs Windows XP and Windows 7 operating systems. The NEXCOM VMC 1000 is a fully integrated rugged and vibration resistant device designed specifically for in-vehicle use and features built in GPS navigation, a wide choice of wireless communication options and a direct link to vehicle telematics using its onboard CANbus interface. Its compact size allows it to fit easily in the smallest of available spaces, keeping the vehicle dashboard free of clutter.

The computer measures only 18.5 cm wide x 5 cm high x 14 cm deep and weighs 1 kg. The compact dimensions make it ideal for mobile applications in a wide range of vehicles and would suit commercial and local authority fleet operations. In addition to its general-purpose use, the ability to collect vehicle and driver performance data automatically also makes it an ideal platform to support fuel and operational efficiency initiatives across all fleet operators. Organisations running specialist vehicles - refuse collectors, gritters, street sweepers, road maintenance vehicles, heavy-duty off-road equipment - and forklift trucks could also benefit from the flexibility of Rugged Mobile Systems' latest offering.

The VMC1000 computer is designed for use with external aerials, which will ensure significantly improved signal coverage when compared with devices that use internal antennae. The manufacturer has also adopted the latest low-power consumption processor, choosing a 1.0 GHz Intel® Atom™ E640 to provide the computing engine for the device. This reduces the power consumption from the vehicle battery, and the unit can be used with a variety of supplies from six to 36 Volts and its "smart power management" functionality includes low-voltage protection and ignition delay.

"The VMC 1000 has been designed to provide a fully functional, powerful, integrated rugged in-cab computing and telematics solution at a competitive price. The small form factor makes it ideal for a wide range of vehicle applications, particularly where space is restricted. The IP54 rating ensures that it can be used in rugged environments and it has been designed to provide consistent performance in a wide variety of vehicle types. Having onboard GPS, 3G and WiFi, and the ability to link to the Canbus makes this an extremely interesting device for fleet operators who want to manage their vehicles and drivers, while improving service," says Ges Jones, Director of Rugged Mobile Systems.
