Shanks helps UK businesses to improve recycling rates with sponsorship of the National Recycling Stars scheme

Summer events kick off in Edinburgh on 30th June, followed by Northampton on

5th July

Sponsored by Shanks, The National Recycling Stars scheme supports and rewards UK organisations that are committed to increasing the amount of waste they recycle and improving the environmental awareness of their staff.

Organisations are awarded up to three stars depending on their level of recycling excellence and, to ensure this level is sustained, Stars are reviewed on an annual basis.

Recognising that learning by example is the best way to develop effective recycling programmes, Shanks is supporting a series of events that brings together businesses with key figureheads in the recycling and environmental sectors to ask questions and gain advice on how to make their workplaces more sustainable.

Over half a day, issues covered will include practical information on how to improve recycling rates and the impact of the latest legislation. Participants will come away with tips and ideas that will inspire their management and colleagues alike and make a real difference to their company's sustainable operations.

The first event takes place on 30th June at The Scotsman Hotel in Edinburgh. Speakers include:

· Robbie Weir, Programme Manager - SME Business Resource Efficiency, Zero Waste Scotland

· Scott Brady, Environmental Consultant

· Ann Maclachlan, Environmental Assurance Manager, BAA Glasgow Airport

· Stephen Wise, Technical Director, Shanks Waste Management

The next event takes place on 5th July at the Hilton Hotel, Northampton.

Speakers include:

· Jenni Donato, Resource Efficiency Specialist, WRAP

· Carol Wakelin, Environmental Coordinator, Queensgate Shopping Centre

· Stephen Wise, Technical Director, Shanks Waste Management

"A lot of businesses are unaware of the impact of waste on their bottom line," said Austen Lees, Head of Corporate Communications, Shanks Group, "and through the Recycling Stars programme, we are working with businesses large and small providing advice on how to improve their recycling rates. We hope to see a lot more of this type of collaborative working with the recent launch of the Responsibility Deal between the Government and waste industry."

Both events are free to attend but places are limited. If you'd like to attend, please contact Rebecca on 020 7384 6485 or rebecca.d@nationalrecyclingstars.com.
