Spirit Data Capture Limited, the independent mobile computing and data capture consultancy, has been helping Biffa Waste Services to develop a more effective and more reliable data collection system. The M3 Mobile devices sourced by Spirit have led to more reliable results; reduced administration costs; and more accurate data.
Biffa Waste Services is a market leader in the UK's waste management sector and runs a fleet of some 1,200 waste collection trucks. Some years ago, these were fitted with Biffa's own data collection system, BINS (Biffa In Cab Notification System). This enabled Biffa to provide real-time confirmation of its services to its depots and its customers, via the corporate intranet.
Unfortunately, the original hardware was unable to cope with the rigours of a harsh working environment and became unreliable. The company therefore started looking for alternative solutions and approached Spirit, having been impressed by the company's professionalism and technical expertise.
Spirit offered Biffa several devices and after extensive trials of the two favourites, the company opted for the M3 Sky from M3 Mobile - a rugged, IP64-rated PDA-style mobile computer. The M3 Sky's features include Windows Mobile 5.0 and an integrated GPS module.
Spirit fully prepared the units and replaced the standard application with Biffa's own software. The M3 Sky devices were then fitted into all of Biffa's service vehicles. They are now being used for vehicle safety checks; mileage and driver details; job details; disposal details; image capture; signature capture; and GPS positioning.
The six month roll-out was completed in March. Brian Laner, Biffa's Business Systems Analyst, says: "This relied heavily on careful planning, trust, and complete co-operation between both of our companies throughout. The users have already given us some very positive feedback about the new devices. Their ruggedness makes them much more suitable and their reliability and additional features are much appreciated."
