Eddie Stobart Ltd has upgraded and expanded its trailer fleet with the acquisition of 225 new Schmitz Cargobull fixed roof curtainsiders.
The trailers, which will work across a number of Eddie Stobart’s existing contracts, replace 223 vehicles that had originally formed part of the fleet operated by Irlam, the haulier acquired by Stobart Group in 2008.
Kenny Wylie, Schmitz Cargobull’s key accounts manager, commented: "We are delighted to have secured this order. While Schmitz Cargobull already provides the overwhelming majority of Eddie Stobart’s refrigerated trailer fleet, Eddie Stobart has, until now, had a single supplier for its curtainsiders. This latest order is therefore, particularly significant for us. We feel it sends a strong signal to the rest of the industry about the build quality of the Schmitz Cargobull product."
Schmitz Cargobull launched its new fixed roof curtainsider trailer in December 2009. The new model, which will be built at the company’s German Plant in Altenberge, has been designed to be more robust, lighter and easier to use than existing fixed roof vehicles.
Support posts retract along the full length of the trailer to give completely unobstructed side access when loading and unloading, while the roof itself is produced using galvanized steel cassettes that interlock to form their own cross member support structure. The cassette sections can be simply removed if damaged and replaced – making the roof easy to maintain over its lifetime. Significantly, the fact that the steel used in the roof’s construction is lighter than aluminium which has traditionally been used, means the overall weight of the trailer is reduced and fuel efficiency is improved – an important consideration for Eddie Stobart Ltd.
Schmitz Cargobull worked closely with Eddie Stobart’s Fleet Engineer Stuart Smith to introduce a number of small but significant modifications to the trailers in order for them to meet the day- to-day demands of the Stobart Group network.
Schmitz Cargobull’s UK Regional Sales Director, Nigel Somers, commented: "Fixed roof curtainsider sales represent in the region of two-thirds of the UK curtainsider market. We believe that our new fixed roof model will help us to grow our share of the UK curtainsider market considerably over the next three years."
Eddie Stobart already operates an extensive fleet of Schmitz Cargobull refrigerated trailers. In 2008 the company ordered150 dual – and 100 single-temperature vehicles from the Schmitz Cargobull range which they added to last year with the acquisition of 30 new Schmitz Cargobull refrigerated trailers.
