SUEZ recycling and recovery UK has taken delivery of three new Volvo L110H loading shovels, one of which is a Super Long Boom version that has been deployed at the company’s North Tyneside Transfer Station in North Shields.
Replacing a nine year old Volvo L120E, this is the first time the company has opted for a Volvo loading shovel with this super long boom option. In fact this is the very first Volvo loading shovel to have had its TP loader linkage extended to achieve a bucket pin height of 5.12 metres, thus enabling it to load high-sided walking floor trailers with ease.
“The L110H is the optimum sized wheeled loader for most of our transfer sites but, in its standard configuration, doesn’t have the sufficient load over height to handle high-sided bulkers,” comments SUEZ’s Technical Manager for Mobile Plant, Malcolm Judd.
“Volvo demonstrated their ability to come up with an attractive solution for the machine which involved adding 467mm to the boom directly behind the TP linkage.”
In doing so, the overall length of the machine has been increased by just over 1 metre to 7.54 metres. The machine has been further enhanced by adding solid wheel and tyre assemblies allowing it to handle a direct mounted 4.5m³ high-tip bucket with a rated load of 4050kg.
Powered by a Tier IV final Volvo 8 litre engine, developing 258 nett hp with a maximum torque of 1250Nm at just 1450rpm, the nineteen tonne L110H also benefits from Volvo designed and manufactured driveline components, designed to offer considerable fuel savings each shift. Fuel savings are further enhanced by the Volvo Eco pedal, encouraging the operator to run the machine at its optimum rpm in the engine’s torque curve.
The machine has also benefitted from additional features which include a hinged bar type screen guard, guarding for the working lights, an automatic fire suppression and engine shut down system, reversible fan and a wide core radiator. Safety features include a white noise alarm, convex mirrors and rear view camera. Elsewhere on the machine, operators can keep an accurate check on what tonnage is being loaded thanks to the installation of an RDS 8000 weigh loader.
The new super long boom L110H takes over as the prime mover at SUEZ’s North Tyneside transfer station and will be working a minimum of twelve hours a day, seven days a week. It will be handling a wide range of material including domestic and industrial waste, glass, green waste, metals and other recyclables, such as paper and cardboard. In all, the machine will handle in excess of 90,000 tonnes per annum according to the Senior Site Manager at North Tyneside – Stephen Atkinson.
