Third Party Logistics (3PL) provider RCS Logistics has invested more than £340,000 in upgrading its existing transport fleet, including three new tractor units and three new double deck trailers.
This latest fleet upgrade programme at RCS Logistics includes a £240,000 investment in three new Scania 440 Topline tractor units, two of which are replacements for existing vehicles and one an additional unit for the fleet. The three new units will be utilised by RCS for general distribution work in international and UK operations.
In addition to the three new Scania tractor units, RCS has invested a further £100,000 in three new Don-Bur double deck trailers, which the company will utilise on its distribution contract with The Delivery Co.
The Delivery Co. is a specialist in the storage and distribution of paper, board and plastics. Originally formed to service the warehousing and distribution requirements for the three UK paper merchants owned by PaperlinX – Howard Smith Paper Group, Robert Horne Group and The Paper Company – it has a network of regional warehouses across the UK and Northern Ireland, linked by an overnight trunking operation, designed to meet the service demands of the industry, providing both a same-day and a timed next-day delivery service as appropriate.
The new Don-Bur 13.7m tri axle trailers are ‘teardrop’ style curtain-sided units that incorporate special, multi-positional mechanical lifting decks. These custom-designed, three-tier ‘ratchet’ decks can be adapted to suit any load. This adjustable deck solution provides optimal space utilisation for the operator, enabling a variety of different weight loads within the 44-tonne legislation.
Originally launched in 2006, the Teardrop concept has already become a well-proven product that generates fuel savings of between 3% and 20% depending on operating conditions. RCS will use the new Don-Bur trailers solely for trunking work across the UK, including night operations.
Brian Moran, Operations Support Manager at The Delivery Co. comments: "We have been working with RCS Logistics since early 2000, when we identified them as a forward thinking, customer service-driven company, whose values aligned with our own. It was because of this that we decided to develop our first ratchet deck trailers with RCS and Don-Bur. Back in 2000, due to our changing product mix, these trailers solved the difficult problem of trunking conventional paper pallets with large format plastic sheets and were the first of their kind in the UK. Working closely with RCS was the key to making this major development a success, resulting in a reduction of 1,000,000 km per annum from our trunking routes."
"More than 10 years on, the relationship with RCS is still strong and we have continued the development of that relationship by introducing the new ‘Teardrop’ version of the original ratchet deck trailer. Again, a UK first, this continues to demonstrate the benefits of working with partners such as RCS," he added.
Darren Beaty, Operations Director at RCS Logistics comments: "We are delighted to announce these significant investments in our fleet. The three new Scania units are now the newest in our 50-strong fleet. Furthermore, the new Don Bur trailers will provide our customer with complete flexibility and adaptability in terms of the type of loads that can now be transported in a single consignment."
