Walkers needed for big challenge in Peter Huntley’s memory

Charitable volunteers from the transport industry are being urged to swap their suits and ties, for walking boots and waterproofs, to take part in a Big Walk to a Small Pub on 6 July 2013.

The event – organised by international development charity, Transaid – is being held in memory of Peter Huntley, the former Managing Director of Go North East and founder of specialist public transport consultants TAS Partnership. Mr Huntley was an avid fundraiser and had been training for a Transaid trek to the North Pole, when he died in the Lake District in February last year.

Inspired by Mr Huntley’s philanthropic spirit, Transaid has organised a one day challenge in his name, which will see participants hiking up Wales’ highest mountain, Snowdon, before enjoying a well-deserved celebratory pint or two.

The expedition will be led by Mr Huntley’s son, Dan Q, and the challenge has already attracted interest from members of the bus, coach and rail industries, and the trade press. Anyone interested is advised to sign up quickly as spaces are limited.

Gary Forster, Chief Executive of Transaid, says: "Peter was a great supporter of Transaid and a great friend to many in the transport industry, so we’re delighted to organise a fundraising event in his memory.

"The Big Walk to a Small Pub will be a fantastic opportunity to raise money, make new friends within the industry and raise a toast in Peter’s honour."

Mr Huntley was MD of Go North East from 1996 to 2011 and founder of specialist public transport consultants TAS Partnership. A keen walker, cyclist and climber, he had raised thousands in his lifetime for charities and had hoped to raise £10,000 for Transaid with a trek from Russia to the Arctic Circle.

To sign up to the walk visit http://expeditionwise.com, choose ‘challenges’, then ‘challenge dates and costs’, and select ‘The Big Walk to the Small Pub in Memory of Peter Huntley’ from the list. All participants must pledge £450 to take part in the walk and a registration fee of £112 is to be paid on signing-up for the event.

For more information about taking part, please contact Florence at Transaid on 020 7387 8136 or email Florence@transaid.org.

Participants already registered for the event include: Malcolm Robson, President of the Confederation of Passenger Transport and MD of Ipswich Buses; Trevor Roberts, MD of Blackpool Transport; teams from TAS Partnership including Adrian Grant, Richard Armitage, John Godfrey, Nick Dangerfield and John Taylor – and from Barclays Bank including Rob Riddleston and David McCarthy – and Robert Jack, the Managing Editor of Passenger Transport.
