A fast, efficient response to a tender document issued by Whitehead Building Services opened the door to an order for 33 Mercedes-Benz Citan vans.
The vehicles, all fuel-efficient 109 CDI models, were supplied by South Wales Dealer Euro Commercials and are the subject of contract hire agreements. Most are Long-bodied versions although the line-up also includes seven Compacts and a couple of Extra-longs.
Whitehead Building Services provides a full range of mechanical, electrical and management/maintenance solutions. From its Newport-base, the company designs, installs, tests/commissions, manages and maintains buildings across the UK. It has an exceptional safety record, and a management style that “gets things done”, both of which have made it one of the country’s most successful and respected M&E providers.
The company had previously leased a variety of vehicles, most recently from independent specialists. But with the business growing strongly, it resolved to take a fresh look at its fleet arrangements.
Managed Services Manager Gavin Thomas recalled: “We emailed our tender request to four suppliers and from the outset Euro Commercials’ response was the most professional.
“In fact, throughout the process the Mercedes-Benz team have bent over backwards to provide all we’ve needed and more. This is in marked contrast to the other vehicle providers we approached – I had to chase them!”
Euro Commercials supplied its prospective customer with a demonstrator. “We trialled the Citan for a week, and were able to get a good feel for it,” continued Mr Thomas. “It ticked all the boxes in terms of driver comfort – a vast improvement on our previous vehicles – space, payload and fuel-efficiency.”
The Citan is the smallest van ever to wear a three-pointed star and is highly economical to run, the 90 hp 109 CDI model returning up to 61.4 mpg. With safety a key priority for Whitehead Building Services, the leadership in this field of Mercedes-Benz was also key to the Citan’s appeal.
Whitehead Building Services has assigned its Long and Extra-long Citans, some of which are crew vans with second rows of seats, to maintenance staff working nationwide.
“The feedback from those using our new vans has been entirely positive,” confirmed Mr Thomas. “As a business, we also appreciate the fact that the Citan is a good-looking vehicle and Mercedes-Benz a high-end brand whose reputation for quality can only enhance our own image.
“The contract hire deal represents excellent value for money too. We benefit from predictable costs so can budget with confidence, and we have the peace of mind that comes from knowing our new vans will be maintained by factory-trained technicians fitting only Mercedes-Benz GenuineParts.”
He added: “Our established vehicle supplier also offered us Citans but when it comes to service Euro Commercials are clearly on a different level.”
Whitehead Building Services Managing Director Rhys Morton is passionate about recruiting and retaining the best staff, and building strong, lasting relationships with clients. Safety is central to the company’s ethos, and as well as completing projects on time and on budget, it takes pride in doing so with zero accidents.
